The Oczak's home is located near the General's clubhouse in the Galena Territory. Ray, whom I believe played golf for his college team, and Kathy are both avid golfers. Ray is one of the few Territory property owners that is a good enough golfer to actually enjoy the General as a challenging but fair course. Of course, the rest of us hackers realize the General is anything but fair. We see it for what it really is, a Hitchcockian experiment in terror which is probably responsible for most of the clubs you see for sale on EBay.
As you can see from the photos below, we installed a brick front walkway for the Oczaks. The Oczaks required handicap / wheelchair access from the driveway to the front door. Of course, like most of the homes in the Territory, there is a hill in front of their home. Consequently, we had to build a quarry stone retaining wall on each side of the walk so that the walkway itself could be relatively flat. Because of the steep slope of the front hill, the retaining wall on that side of the walk is almost 6' tall. The stone wall on the home side was kept to approximately 2' in height. This wall defines a raised garden that runs along the length of the walkway.
The walkway itself is made of multi-colored brick pavers. As you can see in the photos, a row of "soldier" bricks border each side of the walk. The middle of the walk is a standard brick pattern. However, because of the natural curve of the walkway, we were able to set the middle bricks in a flowing serpentine path.
As the walk approaches the home, it widens to join to the steps from the Oczak's upper parking area. Where the path widens, we installed a circular centerpiece (please see photos below). We also replaced the existing railroad tie steps with split stone steps set directly into the retaining wall.
We would like to thank the Oczaks for allowing us to show you their walkway.
